Favourite neck strengthening exercises, – you feel all the muscles at the buck of your neck working and it leaves your head feeling lighter and clearer

Although it supports the head and is always in evidence, the neck very often gets forgotten (the face is beautifully cleaned and made-up, for example, and the poor neck is neglected). So try to nourish and look after it, as it tends to age faster than the face and f it is almost impossible to disguise a lined, craggy neck.

One of the most important exercises is to hold your head up, so practice walking around with a book on your head. Then see if you can write with the book still balancing there.  Afterwards, remember the position of your head when you had the book on it, and this will make you walk more gracefully, and help on how to get rid of a double chin.

These neck exercises will not only improve your looks and posture, but will also ease your aches and tensions. Most people, at some time or another, get an aching neck and shoulders, and this tensions leads to stiffness and headaches.

1. Stand or sit with your back straight and shoulders down and relaxed. Drop your head forward. The head weighs about six pounds; let its weight pull the head down, and feel those muscles stretch at the back of the neck. Bring your head upright again and drop it backwards. Do this neck exercise unhurriedly, and repeat six times.

2.    Sitting in the same position drop your head to the right side, so that your ear nearly touches your shoulder. Feel the neck muscles stretch. Bring your head upright again and drop it to the left. Allow a count of two for each movement and repeat six times.

3.    The same position again, but this time instead of dropping your head to the side, turn it. Try to get your chin parallel to your shoulder with each turn. Do the whole exercises for neck pain four times. Then rotate your head four times to the right then four to the left. This not only uses all the neck muscles but helps get rid of a ‘dowager’s hump’ and relieves tension from the back of the neck.

4.    Slowly roll the head around, from, left, back, right, and to the front again. Do this four times going clockwise then repeat going anti-clockwise. I think this is my favourite neck strengthening exercises, – you feel all the muscles at the buck of your neck working and it leaves your head feeling lighter and clearer (if a trifle dizzy at first).
