Is it safe to use hair dyes regularly?
In general, it is discourage for people from using hair dyes. Artificial colors are suspect in cosmetic products, just as they are in your food. And when you apply hair dyes to your head, they’re absorbed through the scalp, where there’s a very rich blood supply that may carry them throughout the body. There has been some speculation that hair dyes can increase the risk of bladder cancer. That’s because the chemicals in the dye are absorbed, and they concentrate in the bladder.
Dark dyes are of particular concern, because they contain a higher concentration of chemicals than the light ones. About half of all women in the United Stales dye their hair—an increase of about 50 percent in the past decade.
And the hair-dye market for middle-aged men is expected to grow rapidly—already one in eight men between the ages of thirteen and seventy use dyes. Commercial hair-dye makers sell $7 billion worth of their products worldwide every year.
The most recent research on hair dyes and cancer, a seven-year study of 573369 women by the American Cancer Society, didn’t find a significantly increased risk. Women who used very dark dyes over a period of twenty years or more did have a greater potential to develop bone cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, however. It has been suggested that dyes could have been a cause of Jacqueline Onassis’s cancer. And other studies have associated an increased risk of cancer with hair dyes.
Cancer or no, dyes aren’t very healthy for your hair. They can cause it to become brittle and break easily.
If you do plan to use hair dye, make sure you don’t leave the dye on your head any longer than necessary. Rinse your scalp thoroughly with water when you’re done. Wear gloves during the whole process.
Henna, a plant-derived dye, is okay to use. And you can find other natural dyes in health food stores.
