The usual cause of bad breath is bacteria growing on the tongue, and sometimes around the gum line, too. There are a couple of simple ways to take care of the problem.
First, try a tongue scraper. This is a metal instrument that you use to scrape your tongue once or twice a day, cleaning off bacteria.
Second, you can brush your tongue with a germicidal toothpaste when you’re brushing your teeth. Just take an extra thirty seconds to brush your tongue after you’re done with your teeth, and try to include the back of your tongue—which will take some practice.
One product that works well is chlorine dioxide, which is in some regular toothpastes (for instance, Oxyfresh).
Or go to a health food store and look for a toothpaste containing tea tree oil, an extract from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, an Australian tree. Tea tree oil is a safe, powerful disinfectant that smells a bit like eucalyptus.
For temporary breath problems—say, when you return to work after a garlic-and-onion-laden lunch—try chewing on a bit of parsley or some fennel seeds. These will freshen your breath and also offer a nice finish to a meal.
Try to stay away from products like Certs and Breath-Savers; they contain aspartame.
Bad breath is sometimes associated with gum disease. Check your gums for signs of irritation or swelling. If you notice a problem, talk to your dentist about it (he or she may refer you to a periodontist).
Constant bad breath also may be a sign of systemic illness, especially liver disease or kidney disease. If it’s a systemic problem, the breath is likely to have a distinct smell. Liver problems produce a mousy odor; severe bronchial infections will smell rotten.
Sinusitis and inflammation inside the nose can also cause bad breath.
I wouldn’t pay much attention to the claims made about mouthwashes like Scope or Listerine. These germicidal formulas may help, but they often don’t penetrate into the crevices of the tongue. That’s why I prefer brushing the tongue.
